In reality it looked like this;
As you can see the pirates chose the narrowest part of the pass, this was enhanced by a gentle ridge that ran from the cliffs to the sea. On this ridge they dug in two redoubts to house their four heavy cannon. They were also had time to prepare additional light works that would provide cover to their Foot Companies. Not daring to challenge the will of Louis The Ravenous the Freedonians duly made plans to assault this defense.
the pirates decided to cover the gap between the end of the ridge and the sea with
one section of light works, they covered the from of one of the redoubts with the other section
the Freedonians deployed with the most experienced unit to their left and the fresh recruits to the far right, a woods covered the draftees from fire for most of the approach march
needing to close the range as quickly as possible
the Freedonians issued "Run" orders to the entire command
during the approach the pirates concentrated all their fire on the closest Freedonian unit, it shook off several morale tests but eventually failed and left the field, the attached melee company kept creeping along in the woods along the foot of the cliff
bursting forth from their cover the Melee company assaulted the pirates and,
in an eruption of mighty die-rolling, drove them back
unfortunately for they were not supported by the rest of the Freedonian army who were moving forward rather slowly in the face of ferocious fire
the pirate reserves moved rapidly to repair the break in the line
and destroyed the lone Freedonian unit
even the rapid deployment of the other Freedonian Melee Company
from the center wasn't enough to redress this onslaught
the pirate cannon were also pounding the center of the Freedonian line,
pushing it very near to morale failure
both melee units fought like tigers but the pirates were he ones that passed their break test
In the next turn another Freedonian Pike & Shot unit failed morale and fled the field. With this the Freedonian commander called for a retreat before the rest of his army was put to flight as well. The pirates demurred on the opportunity to pursue the retiring enemy on the idea that they had been hired to hold the pass and that the cannon had been a crucial part of their victory.
Nice looking game, what a wonderful terrain!
ReplyDeleteThank you, when I get a chance I do like to make the battlefield look as good as possible
ReplyDeleteSPOON! DAMNATION MAN!! Where is the spoon?
ReplyDelete(you had to be there)
Truth be told every single photo that had the spoon in it was out of focus! You need to bring it next time to check if the problem was operator error of some magical property of the spoon (witchcraft is suspected!)
